Matthew 18:1-14

Lost Sheep

Our churches are accustomed to thinking of the ‘lost’ as those who have never been in the flock at all.  However, in Matthew’s version of the shepherd story we are dealing with weak Christians not lost non-Christians.  Matthew’s context of the story of the lost sheep is church discipline rather than mission.  The church is called to seek the one lost sheep who has wandered from the fold.  In Luke’s gospel story of the lost sheep, the shepherd is Jesus who, with the church, has a missional mandate to seek the lost.  Whereas Matthew’s story envisions the entire Christian community called to a relational enfolding ministry of those ‘sheep’ on the edge, slipping from the fold or gone.  Officers of the church should be the first to take this instruction to heart.
