Matthew 1:1-17

The Family Tree

Suppose your 2nd cousin was a hockey star in the NHL.  You might be tempted to mention him on some occasion.  However, let’s say another member of your lineage had been heavily involved in drug trafficking.  His name you may want to keep hidden.  Matthew’s gospel doesn’t sanitize Jesus’ family tree prior to announcing the birth of God’s Son.  Rather, Jesus’ family tree is a motley group with stories that might be found in any of our lineages.  Stories that might make us blush, in telling them.  Jesus consented to be born into a family lineage that included Jacob the cheat, Rahab the harlot, David the adulterer, and Manasseh the baby sacrificer, just to name a few.  Jesus also took their place when he went to the cross to die for the sins of the whole world.  If the eternal & divine Christ willingly entered the world to be born into his sinful & dysfunctional family, how much more is Jesus willing to stand with and love my family and me.
